Dr Steven James works as a Senior Lecturer in Nursing in the School of Health, at the University of the Sunshine Coast. He holds an honorary appointment as a Clinical Associate Professor within the Department of Medicine (Austin Health) at the University of Melbourne.

Dr Steven James has around two decades experience as a clinician in cardiology, emergency medicine, paediatrics and, primarily, diabetes. This has been in world-wide healthcare systems, and at non-governmental organisations. More recently, he has been a Senior Lecturer of Nursing at the University of the Sunshine Coast, Australia.

Steven’s PhD focused on current and future service support for young adults with type 1 diabetes in Australia, and his research direction is to expand his contribution in the field of chronic disease, particularly type 1 diabetes involving children, adolescents and young adults.

He has led and is part of teams that have been awarded grants involving type 1 diabetes and has been recognised as a Future Research Leader in diabetes by the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Australia (2018). Further, Steven has won the prestigious Diabetes Australia Research Program 2024 Charles Coghlan OAM Emerging Researcher Award, and the University of the Sunshine Coast School of Health Dean’s research excellence award (2024). He is regularly invited to participate in domestic and international diabetes-related initiatives. This is by organisations including the International Diabetes Epidemiology Group, the International Diabetes Federation, the International Society of Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetes (for which he is an elected advisory council member), and the World Health Organization. Steven is also a Lancet commissioner: Type 1 diabetes.

Of Steven’s publications in SciVal, his field-weighted citation impact from 2014 to 2024 was 18.97, which put him 1797% over the world average in all subject areas; 11.8% of these publications are in the 1% most cited publications world-wide, and 19.6% in the 10% most cited publications worldwide (field weighted).

Steven is open to receiving enquiries from prospective PhD, Masters or Honours students for diabetes-related study.
